About the Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli is a rock rather than a single mineral, and its blue comes from lazurite. What sets it apart is how even that blue stays, holding across a wide surface instead of shifting band to band the way agate does.

Two other minerals read in it. Pyrite shows as small brass-colored flecks that catch the light, and calcite runs through as white or pale gray veining. Polished lapis has a waxy shine rather than a glassy one, and it is opaque, so light stays on the surface.

How It’s Made

The top is a round slab cut from lapis and polished flat. Its rim is electroformed, meaning metal is grown onto the stone in thin layers until it has real thickness and is bonded to the slab. The legs are electroformed metal in the finish of the edge.

Gold is the traditional pairing for lapis and warms the blue. Silver keeps it cold. Rose gold softens the contrast.

Details

  • Material: Lapis lazuli
  • Diameter: 12", 14" or 16"
  • Height: 19"
  • Table top thickness: 1"
  • Under clearance: 18"
  • Finish: Silver, rose gold or gold electroformed edge and legs
  • Legs: Electroformed metal, removable
  • Use: Indoor

Slight variation in natural stone will occur, so the pyrite flecking and calcite veining differ table to table. Other sizes and shapes can be made to order on request.

Assembly

The box holds the round top, its legs and a wrench for screwing them on. Assembly takes a few minutes on delivery, and the legs are removable, so the table can be taken down again later.

A Gift For

Blue stone furniture is a straightforward gift for someone setting up a new home, and lapis is specific enough to be remembered. It suits a wedding, anniversary or housewarming, and the smallest diameter works for corporate and client gifting.

Care

Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and avoid chemical cleaners. Blot spills with a paper towel immediately and wipe dry, since standing liquid can stain stone.
