Blue Agate Slice Cabinet Knobs

About the Agate

Blue agate runs from a chalky pale blue at the outer layers to a deeper, grayer blue further in, and the bands between the two are separated by fine white lines. The banding is never straight. It follows the wall of the cavity the stone formed in, so it curves, doubles back and sometimes closes into a ring.

The face is polished flat, which brings the color up and makes the white lines read as sharp as drawn ones. Light passing through a thin section turns the blue brighter and slightly green; in shadow the same stone goes close to slate.

How It’s Made

The agate is sliced and polished, and the outline is chipped by hand rather than machined, which is why the width lands anywhere in its range. The edges of each piece are electroformed, real metal grown onto the stone and permanently bonded rather than a leaf or coating that can rub off, in thick metallic gold. A single bolt fixes the finished knob through the door.

No two are exactly alike in outline, in banding or in the depth of the blue.

Fit and Installation

For cabinet doors, drawers and wardrobe fronts, through a single drilled hole. No additional hardware is required. Tighten with care, by hand, and stop as soon as the knob sits firm rather than over-torquing the bolt.

Care

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Household cleaners will dull the polished stone and the metal rim alike.
