About the Obsidian

Obsidian is volcanic glass. Lava cooled too fast for crystals to form, leaving a solid black material that breaks with a curved, shell-like fracture and takes a hard shine.

Held to the light, the thinner edges can pass a brown or gray tint, though the body stays dense black. Against a pale cabinet it reads almost like jet, and the broken faces catch light in sharp points rather than one soft highlight.

How It’s Made

The edge of this one is chipped by hand rather than ground smooth, so the perimeter keeps the flaked texture that obsidian gives when it is worked, while the face stays broad and dark. The rim is then electroformed: real metal grown onto the glass until it has thickness of its own and is permanently bonded, not a leaf or coating that can rub off. Thick metallic gold is standard, with silver and rose gold available.

Every edge is chipped by hand, so the outline and the way the flakes fall differ on each knob and no two come out exactly alike.

Fit and Installation

It mounts on cabinet doors, drawers and wardrobe fronts through a single hole, using the 1.75" brass bolt supplied. No additional hardware is required. Tighten with care and by hand; obsidian is glass, and forcing a bolt against it is the one thing that will crack a face.

Care

Clean with a soft dry cloth. Glass scratches, so keep abrasives, scouring pads and household cleaners away from the surface.
