Synthia — Stained Glass Round Wool Rug in Rainbow & Black

Synthia works like a stained glass window. Long looping black lines sweep across the circle, crossing and recrossing one another, and every shape they create is filled with its own colour — turquoise, royal blue, purple, magenta, red, orange, yellow and green. The loops gather on the left and break out toward the right into a row of rounded, petal-like lobes, then stop, leaving a third of the circle plain black.

That black third is what holds it together. Without it the rainbow would have nowhere to rest; with it, the burst of colour reads as movement, as though it were still spilling across the floor. A hand-tufted round rug for anyone who wants joy underfoot.

Colour Story

  • Turquoise & Royal Blue — the cool segments running through the loops
  • Purple & Magenta — deep and bright accents woven between them
  • Red & Orange — the warmest segments and several of the outer lobes
  • Yellow & Green — fresh bright notes that lift the whole composition
  • Black — the lead-like outlines and the plain field that frames it all

Hand Tufted in Bhadohi, India

Every Synthia rug is handcrafted in our own workshop in Bhadohi, in the heart of India's carpet belt. Artisans hand-tuft 100% New Zealand wool into a cotton canvas backing, to a dense 4000 GSM, then carve every outline by hand.

The fine black outlines are the defining craft here. There are hundreds of segments, and each one is bordered by a thin line that has to stay even and unbroken as it curves — exactly like the lead in a stained glass panel. A thick spot or a break in a single line would show immediately against the bright colour on either side.

New Zealand wool is used for a reason — it is naturally springy, stain-resistant, flame-resistant and holds dye brilliantly, which is what keeps eight saturated colours clear and vivid side by side.

Available Sizes

Seven round diameters: 3 Feet, 4 Feet, 5 Feet, 6 Feet, 8 Feet, 10 Feet and 12 Feet.

  • 3–4 ft — entryways, bedsides, reading nooks, under a small side table
  • 5–6 ft — coffee table anchor, nursery, home office chair zone
  • 8 ft — the most popular living room size; front legs of the sofa sit on the rug
  • 10–12 ft — large open-plan living rooms and round dining tables, with chairs staying on the rug when pulled out

The colour gathers on one side and the black on the other, so turn the rug with the rainbow facing into the room and the black field under the furniture.

Styling Notes

Synthia is the most joyful rug in the collection. It is a natural fit for a playroom, a teenager's bedroom, a creative studio or a maximalist living room, and it works just as well as the single burst of colour in an otherwise white or grey space. Keep the furniture simple and solid — black, white or one of the rug's own colours — and let the rug do the talking. Suits pop art, maximalist and contemporary interiors.

Care Instructions

  • Dry clean only — do not machine wash, soak or steam clean
  • Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; use suction only on cut pile
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth — never rub
  • Easy to clean: the dense wool pile releases dust and dirt with routine vacuuming
  • Shedding is normal on a new wool rug for the first few weeks and settles with vacuuming
  • Trim any sprouting tufts with scissors — never pull them
  • Rotate every 6 months for even wear and consistent light exposure
  • Use an anti-slip rug pad underneath to stop movement and extend the life of the pile
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading on the brighter colours
  • Air the rug outdoors in shade occasionally to refresh the wool
