Hausar — Botanical Round Wool Rug in Gold, Olive Green & Black

Hausar fills the whole circle with foliage. Golden fronds, olive ferns, cream palm leaves and dusty rose blooms overlap and push past one another, with rust orange sprigs threaded between them. There is no empty space and no centre — the design simply continues to the edge and is cut off by it, the way a photograph crops a jungle.

It is a hand-tufted round rug with genuine maximalist confidence, and the black ground is what gives it that confidence.

Colour Story

  • Black — the ground, and the reason every other colour reads at full strength
  • Golden Yellow — the largest fronds, carrying most of the light
  • Olive & Moss Green — ferns cutting across the composition
  • Cream — pale palm leaves with fine black veining
  • Rust Orange — small sharp sprigs threaded through the gaps
  • Dusty Rose — a mauve-pink bloom anchoring the lower half

Hand Tufted in Bhadohi, India

Every Hausar rug is handcrafted in our own workshop in Bhadohi, in the heart of India's carpet belt. Artisans hand-tuft 100% New Zealand wool into a cotton canvas backing using a hand-held tufting gun, then carve the outline and the internal veining of every single leaf.

That veining is the slowest part of making this rug. Each frond carries dozens of fine lines running along its length, and they have to stay even and parallel as the leaf curves — leaf after leaf, across the entire surface. It is the difference between foliage that looks drawn and foliage that looks printed.

New Zealand wool is used for a reason — it is naturally springy, stain-resistant, flame-resistant and holds dye brilliantly, which is what allows a palette this saturated to sit on black without going flat.

Available Sizes

Seven round diameters: 3 Feet, 4 Feet, 5 Feet, 6 Feet, 8 Feet, 10 Feet and 12 Feet.

  • 3–4 ft — entryways, bedsides, reading nooks, under a small side table
  • 5–6 ft — coffee table anchor, nursery, home office chair zone
  • 8 ft — the most popular living room size; front legs of the sofa sit on the rug
  • 10–12 ft — large open-plan living rooms and round dining tables, with chairs staying on the rug when pulled out

Because the foliage runs edge to edge with no centre motif, Hausar works at every size — nothing important gets hidden under a coffee table.

Styling Notes

Hausar is the loudest rug in the collection, so everything else should be quiet. Plain upholstery in cream, oatmeal, olive or charcoal; warm wood, rattan and brass; no competing patterns. It looks exceptional in a dark-walled room, where the black ground ties the rug to the walls and the foliage seems to float. Ideal for maximalist, tropical and bohemian interiors, and a strong choice for a dining room or a garden room with plenty of plants.

Care Instructions

  • Dry clean only — do not machine wash, soak or steam clean
  • Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; use suction only on cut pile
  • Vacuum gently over the carved veining so the leaf detail keeps its definition
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth — never rub; act fast on the cream leaves
  • Easy to clean: the dense wool pile releases dust and dirt with routine vacuuming
  • Shedding is normal on a new wool rug for the first few weeks and settles with vacuuming
  • Trim any sprouting tufts with scissors — never pull them
  • Rotate every 6 months for even wear and consistent light exposure
  • Use an anti-slip rug pad underneath to stop movement and extend the life of the pile
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading on the gold and rose
  • Air the rug outdoors in shade occasionally to refresh the wool
