Banded Agate Side Table, Round Top
About the Agate
Banded agate is a layered stone. Silica-rich water seeped into a gas pocket in cooling lava and set coat after coat, each carrying a slightly different mineral load, so the stone is a stack of stripes that follow the shape of the cavity rather than any straight line.
Cut flat, those stripes read as rings of cream, amber, gray and rust, tight in places and broad in others. The pale bands are translucent enough to carry light a short way in, which makes the darker lines look set below the surface instead of printed on it.
How It’s Made
The slab is cut to a circle and the face polished until the banding comes up clear, with the rim left as a clean round edge. Metal is electroformed onto that rim, grown onto the stone until the shell has thickness of its own and a permanent bond, so there is nothing to peel or rub away. The legs are electroformed to the same finish. Gold picks up the amber and rust, rose gold leans on the warmer bands, and silver sharpens the gray and cream.
