About the Agate

Red agate takes its color from iron oxide laid down between the silica bands, which is why the red sits inside the stone and runs right through a slice instead of resting on the surface. Tones range from brick through to a dark wine.

Lit from behind, the thinner bands glow orange while the dense ones stay solid. Polished flat, the face has depth to it: the eye reads several layers down before the color closes up.

How It’s Made

The stone is cut into the long Barbarella bar, a narrow upright handle taken in the hand along its full length, then drilled for two screws. The edges are electroformed, real metal grown onto the stone and permanently bonded rather than a leaf or coating that can rub off, and the finish can be gold, silver or rose gold. Brass hardware carries it.

Each piece is unique and there will be slight variations in shape and color, from the depth of the red to the run of the banding.

Fit and Installation

Fits cupboards, cabinets and drawers, mounted upright. The pair of screws is 5.08 cm (2") long and spaced 4" (10cm) apart. Tighten them by hand so the stone is not levered against the door.
