The Plaque

A rectangle with a stepped border, the house name across the head, a map pin sculpted large in the middle of the field, and the latitude and longitude on two lines beneath it.

It gives the exact position of the house rather than its address. Those are not the same thing, and the difference is the whole idea.

Why coordinates

An address is administrative. It can be renumbered, the street can be renamed, and it tells you nothing you could not get from an envelope. A coordinate is the place itself, fixed to six decimals, and it will still describe that spot when the house has changed hands three times.

Most people order it for the house they live in. A good number order it for somewhere else: where they got engaged, the field where a wedding was held, a grandparent's farm, a stretch of coast. The plaque does not know the difference.

Craftsmanship

Real copper and brass grown over the sculpted form rather than cast. Coordinates are a hard thing to set in metal because the string is long and the characters are small, and a cast digit at that scale loses its counters and turns into a blob. Grown over a sculpted form each figure keeps its shape. The pin, the border and the lettering are cut at their own heights, 2 to 5 mm off the ground, so the pin stands well clear of the text. The plaque is 8 to 10 mm thick and solid all the way through.

Built to last

Sealed under a UV-protective finish once the patina is applied. It holds up outdoors in sun and rain as readily as it does on an interior wall, and there is nothing in it that can rust.

Personalization

Three things: the name across the head, and the two coordinate lines. Send the coordinates exactly as you want them to appear, including the degree symbols and the N, S, E and W. If all you have is a pin dropped in a map application, send us the link instead and we will read the figures off it and put them on the preview for you to check.

Nothing is produced until you have approved that preview. Coordinates are the one thing on any of our plaques that a customer cannot proofread at a glance, so we ask you to look at them twice.

Specifications

  • Material: electroformed copper and brass over a solid sculpted core
  • Finish: raised antique brass on a darkened, lightly textured ground
  • Thickness: 0.3 to 0.4 in (8 to 10 mm), solid through
  • Relief: raised detail stands 0.1 to 0.2 in (2 to 5 mm) proud of the ground, at more than one height across the design
  • Shape: rectangle with a stepped border and a sculpted map pin
  • Sizes: eleven, from 6 x 4 to 10 x 10 inches, height x width
  • UV-protected and weather-treated
  • Made to order in our own workshop

Coordinates run long. A full set to four decimal places needs 8 x 6 or larger to stay comfortably readable; below that the figures get small enough that the pin starts to dominate them.

Mounting

Three ways, chosen at checkout.

  • Keyhole slots: two screws in the wall, and the straight top edge makes it easy to level.
  • Peel-and-stick tape: sealed strips already applied to the back. No drilling.
  • Floating stud mount: reinforced studs that hold it clear of the wall and put a shadow under the pin.

Hardware and instructions are included with all three.

Where it works

An entry wall, a study, beside a front door, in a hallway with photographs of the place it names.

Gifting

The standard first-home present among people who would find a family-name sign too formal. It also works as a wedding gift, using the coordinates of the venue rather than the couple's address.

Care

Wipe clean. Avoid harsh cleaners.
